FAQs.

My answers to your questions about learning to drive.

Lessons and availability

Do you teach manual or automatic?

I currently offer manual driving lessons in Worcester.

How much do driving lessons cost?

Get in touch for current lesson prices and availability. Let me know where you’re based and which days and times suit you, and I’ll talk you through the options.

I’ll confirm your rate before you book. Once you start learning with me, that agreed rate stays the same. I don’t increase lesson rates for existing learners.

How long are lessons?

My standard lessons are two hours. This gives us time to settle in, practise and build on what you’ve learned without feeling rushed.

Occasional shorter lessons may be available where needed or where my schedule allows. Longer sessions or a more intensive schedule may also be possible by arrangement.

Why do you recommend two-hour lessons?

I find two hours is the sweet spot for most learners. One hour can feel rushed, while longer sessions can become tiring.

For example, we might spend five minutes planning the lesson, ten minutes travelling to a suitable practice area, ten minutes returning and five minutes reviewing your progress.

In a one-hour lesson, that leaves around 30 minutes to concentrate on our main topic. In a two-hour lesson, it could leave around 90 minutes.

So, although a two-hour lesson costs twice as much, in this example you get three times as long to focus on the skill we’re working on. The journeys are useful practice too, but the extra time gives us more opportunity to develop your understanding and build confidence.

Which areas do you cover?

I cover all areas of Worcester and may be able to offer lessons in surrounding areas, depending on availability. Send me your location or postcode and I’ll let you know whether I can help.

Can you pick me up and drop me off at different places?

Yes! Lessons can start and finish at different local locations, for example, starting at home and finishing at college or work.

If your plans change, just let me know before the lesson so I can confirm the arrangements. I’m happy to accommodate local changes wherever possible.

When do you offer lessons?

Most of my lessons take place during the daytime, Monday to Friday. I also offer a limited number of evening lessons and a Saturday morning slot.

Let me know your availability when you enquire so we can see what might work.

Do you have a waiting list?

I’ll try my best to find you a regular slot straight away, but if I can’t, yes, you can join my waiting list.

With pupils regularly taking their tests, availability can change throughout the month. Let me know which days and times suit you so I can look out for a suitable space.

While you’re waiting, you can also book available lessons I release through the Total Drive app. These might be cancellation spaces or extra availability, so you may be able to get some practice before a regular slot becomes available.

View availability

Do you offer longer lessons or intensive tuition?

Longer lessons or a more intensive schedule may be possible, depending on your needs and my availability.

If you’re hoping to fit in extra practice before a test, get in touch with your current experience and timescale. We can discuss what’s practical and appropriate for you.

Getting started

What happens during my first driving lesson?

If you’re a complete beginner, we’ll start by getting you comfortable in the car. We’ll go through setting up your seat and mirrors, the controls, and the basic routines for preparing to move, checking your surroundings and signalling.

When you’re ready, we’ll practise moving off and stopping, then build towards turns and junctions as your confidence grows.

Everyone learns differently, so there’s no fixed amount you have to get through. If you’re ready to move on, we will. If you need more practice, we’ll take the time you need.

What do I need to bring?

Bring your provisional driving licence and wear comfortable footwear that lets you operate the pedals easily. Thinner soles can help you get a better feel for them.

If you need glasses or contact lenses for driving, make sure you have those too.

Are your lessons suitable for nervous beginners?

Absolutely. I’ll work with you at a pace that feels manageable, with clear explanations and time to practise.

Mistakes are a normal part of learning. We’ll talk through what happened and work out what could help next time. You don’t need to get everything right straight away.

Can I join if I’ve already had lessons elsewhere?

Absolutely. Whether you’ve had a few lessons, are returning after a break or are getting closer to your test, you’re welcome.

We’ll start somewhere quieter so you can get comfortable with the car. I’ll assess where you are with your driving, then we’ll make a plan based on your experience and what needs work.

Payments and cancellations

How and when do I pay?

You can pay by cash, card or bank transfer, whichever works best for you. Payment is due on the day of your lesson.

You can pay as you go or pay for a block of lessons in advance if you prefer.

What happens if I have unused lesson credit?

If you pass your test or decide to stop having lessons, I’ll refund any unused lesson credit.

What if I need to cancel a lesson?

Please give me at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange. Let me know by text or WhatsApp so we both have a written record.

If you cancel with less than 48 hours’ notice, I’ll try to offer your slot to another learner. If I can fill it, you won’t be charged. Otherwise, the full lesson price is payable.

I understand that unexpected things happen and will always try to be reasonable about individual circumstances. Please let me know as soon as you can.

Your driving test

Should I check with you before booking my driving test?

Where possible, please check my availability before booking or changing your test.

I understand that test appointments can be difficult to find, and sometimes you need to act quickly. If you secure a date before speaking to me, let me know as soon as possible and I’ll do my best to accommodate it.

If two pupils book tests that clash, priority goes to the person who told me about their booking first. This keeps things fair for everyone.

Can you accommodate tests outside your usual lesson hours?

I’m happy to accommodate tests on any day of the week where possible, even outside my usual teaching hours.

This is subject to availability, so please check with me when you can and let me know as soon as you book.

Can I use your car for my driving test?

My learners can use my car for their test by arrangement, subject to availability and being ready to drive safely and independently.

We’ll discuss your readiness throughout your lessons. If I think you need more preparation, I’ll explain why, what we need to work on and whether I recommend moving your test.

I’ll raise concerns as early as possible so you have time to plan. Equally, if you’re ready sooner than expected, I’ll tell you and we can discuss looking for an earlier date.

I may decline to provide my car if I don’t believe you’re ready to take the test safely. I don’t offer standalone car hire for driving tests.

Do you charge extra for driving tests?

No. My usual lesson rate applies to the time booked for your test day. There’s no additional premium for using my car just because you’re taking a test.

For tests in Worcester, I usually allow two hours. This covers travelling to and from the test centre, some practice beforehand and the test itself.

For a test at a centre further away, I allow for travel there and back, an hour to practise on local roads beforehand and an hour for the test appointment.

I’ll confirm the time needed and the total charge with you in advance. The driving test booking fee is separate and paid directly to the DVSA, not to me.

Further training

Do you offer motorway lessons?

Yes. As a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor, I can offer motorway tuition before you pass your test, with me alongside you in a dual-controlled car.

We can discuss including motorway driving during your lessons when it’s appropriate for your experience and confidence.

I also offer motorway lessons after you’ve passed, whether you want to build confidence or gain more experience.

Do you offer refresher lessons or Pass Plus?

Yes, I offer both refresher lessons and Pass Plus courses.

If you’ve had a break from driving or want help with particular situations, we can tailor refresher lessons to what you need. Get in touch to discuss your experience and what you’d like to feel more confident doing.

Keeping in touch

Do you use a learner app?

Yes. I use Total Drive to help you organise your lessons and keep track of your learning.

You can use it to view availability, make and check bookings, track your progress, add reflective logs, practise for your theory test and message me directly.

It helps us keep your learning connected between lessons, as well as making the practical details easier to manage.

When can I message you, and how soon will you reply?

You’re welcome to message me at any time, whenever it suits you, including evenings and weekends. There’s no need to wait until working hours to send a question.

I can’t reply while teaching, and I also make time for my family, so replies won’t always be immediate. I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
